eines der vielen Gräber am Straßenrand ...

Angelika hat Euch ja schon kurz etwas von unserem Trip durch das Reservat der Tohona O’odham Indians angedeutet. Wir hatten uns auf dem Weg zum Organ-Pipe National Park leicht verfahren (passiert schon mal) und waren plötzlich mitten im Reservat gelandet. Irgendwie war plötzlich alles ganz anders, und natürlich gingen mir sofort Songs wie „Indian Reservation“ von Don Fardon oder „Ballad of Ira Hayes“ von Townes van Zandt bzw. Johnny Cash oder die Stücke von Buffy Sainte Marie durch den Kopf.

Was wir dann erlebt haben, war ebenso beeindruckend wie bedrückend. Schäbige Wohnsiedlungen und ein totes Pferd an der Straße, endlos viele Polizeikontrollen und ein Verkehrsunfall, unzählige leere Flaschen am Straßenrand.  Und dann hunderte von Kreuzen, die Geschichten von tödlichen Unfällen erzählten.

Mich (und auch Angelika) hat das einige Tage sehr beschäftigt, und jetzt ist ein Song daraus geworden. Ich habe nur das beschrieben, was wir gesehen haben, selbst der Name von Vincent Boss ist echt. Ich habe auch versucht, vordergründige und klischeehafte Bewertungen raus zu lassen … das konnte aber nicht ganz gelingen, denn das ist wirklich the dark side of America. Und über die schönen Seiten berichten wir ja sicher noch genug …

Musikalisch wird das eher ein Sprechgesang in der Art von „Unwritable song“. Als Harmonien habe ich den voraussichtlichen Leitsong des neuen Albums „Trails“ gewählt. Und hier nun die Geschichte von den „Trails of Tohona“:

We had lost our way in the Sonora desert Arizona
And we ended up right in an indian reservation
we passed a battered settlement with the holy name of Santa Rosa
In the heart of the Tohona O’odham nation

There were lots and lots of trash lying beside the road
mainly empty bottles and broken glass
And there were nearly just as many crosses all along the road
Each one with a story of a life that’s lost.

  Cause when you’re looking at the backside of America
  All these stars shine paler as they seemed

We stopped the car to take a look at one of the crosses
we could feel the depressing spirit of this place
It was the father of a family by the name of Vincent Boss
Who lost his life likely in a drunkards race

Maybe a hundred crosses later we reached the town of Sells
That’s the tribal capital of the O’odham nation
We saw police and Indians round an accident in the street
Right across the correctional centre of the reservation.

• They are living on the dark side of America …

In a museum in Tucson we heard some more about this tribe
that was related to the desert for more than 500 years
farming and hunting til they lost their land, their water and their pride
and many got lost in depression, drugs and tears.

Tohona O’odham that means people of the desert
And the desert was nurishing their bodies and their souls
Their gods sent them the Saguaro cactus as a brother
And to learn to respect the desert and themselves, that’s all.
